Flap cartons are one-piece cartons, the edges of which are sewn, glued or joined with a tape. They have flaps at the top and bottom. They are shipped flat. The whole thing is in the form of a cube, thanks to which smaller flap cartons perfectly use the space available in larger boxes of this type – which makes them a good choice if you plan to pack smaller items several times or stack a larger number of these types of cartons on pallets. The simplicity of their structure also makes it easier to match almost any content to their shape. Due to their uniform structure and often large sizes, they are often also equipped with handy transport handles in the form of openings for hands. Production takes place thanks to an automatic production line that uses the following processes: printing, cutting, gluing, folding and forming boxes into packages ready for shipment.
Non-standard cardboard designs, made with a die, are also common. This extends the functionality of the cartons with features such as:
- zipper flap,
- additional compartments where goods can be placed,
- adding a grid to the carton, which separates the individual elements from each other and minimizes the risk of damage to the goods,
- reinforcement of the packaging structure, thanks to which it will be able to carry heavier loads than a standard flap box,
- cutting out ventilation holes with a die,
- cutting a window in one of the cardboard walls to allow viewing of its contents.
Ecological cardboard packaging is distinguished by a different thickness. The wave, i.e. corrugated special recycled paper, gives elasticity to the packaging and absorbs shocks during transport. Individual types of flap boxes can be distinguished due to the number of layers as well as the thickness and position of the wave:
- three-layer corrugated, with a single wave hidden between the outer single cardboard layers,
- corrugated four-layer, with a double wave exposed on one side in the configuration: flat cardboard – wave – flat cardboard – wave,
- corrugated five-layer, with two waves separated by a layer of flat cardboard and hidden between the individual outer layers of cardboard,
- laminated, where a double outer layer of flat cardboard is used,
- bleached, where only a double layer of smooth cardboard is used.
The main advantages of flap boxes are:
- perfect fulfillment of transport and protective functions,
- universality,
- eco-friendliness,
- aesthetics and easy printing of selected patterns,
- high strength,
- low price,
- a large selection of sizes,
- easy to fold.
