What is hydraulics?

Hydraulics (a combination of two words: water and pipe) is the study of the practical application of liquids, especially in traffic. Hydraulics develops and the use of hydraulic systems. The hydraulic system is a set of interconnected parts and their function is to provide power or control through hydraulic fluid under pressure in a closed system. Operation of such a hydraulic system is performed on the basis of force and control the flow of hydraulic fluid. The fluid flow is forced by the pump and the energy is received by the hydraulic cylinders.

The essential parts of the hydraulic system include:

  • Reservoir of hydraulic fluid
  • Hydraulic pump
  • Non-return valve
  • Engine and hydraulic cylinder
  • Valve regulates the flow of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motor and a hydraulic cylinder
  • Filters
  • Venting.

Hydraulic systems are used in aircraft (brakes, chassis) and vehicles (steering).
